I’m stepping into some very large shoes. This marks my first President’s column after several years as our Chapter’s Vice-President. It was a cautious ascension but several encouraged me to step up after former President of the better part of two decades, Dr. Sue Leaf, decided she needed to focus on other areas of life. We owe very much to her service. Sue’s effectiveness and energy was frankly a little daunting even though I’ve led other organizations in the past. She has vast knowledge and many connections but luckily we are not losing her. She is the editor of The Current and will assist in roles she has successfully carried out over the years like bird walks and school programs.
A great birder I’m not nor do I currently possess close relationships with many of the influencers of major environmental groups. But a common attribute of Auduboners and other groups who care deeply for our natural environment is inclusion. My primary goal as your new President is to get you involved with enjoyable endeavors that will further our mission and keep this 40+ year institution relevant. Engaging with like-minded folk for common goals is not a burden but does mean rearranging your schedule. How much is entirely of your choosing of course. But please know that we inspire each other to spend time outdoors, to learn about birds and our natural world, to advocate for wildness, and to share our experiences. By doing so, we can create more peace and happiness in ourselves and build even greater inspiration. Will we change the world? Without a doubt we will!
